Why are some rich, and others not, how does one go about achieving a life of luxury?

Unless you've had a rare sort of upbringing, you won't have been raised to understand how to make money. Teachers can only teach subjects they know, how many of your teachers were rich and had an in-depth understanding of the art of making money?

There's a lot of advice out there, 'Count the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves' that are well-intended, but perhaps not the most useful. I've always been a firm believer in 'Count the pounds and the pennies will look after themselves' myself!

Part of the trick to making money is to learn how to feel good about it. Some great books about feeling good generally are The Secret by Rhonda Byrne and Excuse Me Your Life is Waiting by Lynn Grabhorn. I particularly recommend Excuse Me Your Life is Waiting, which has lots of practical and powerful suggestions about feeling good. The focus on feeling is essential. Positive thinking isn't worth squat if you don't also feel it! One recommendation is if you can't feel good about money, find something else to feel good about first (a happy memory, stroking your cat, going for a walk, etc.) and only review your financial strategy once you're in a feel good place.

So, do whatever's needed to get in a feeling good place, then review your financial decisions.

Be Practical - You might have got a great idea to write a best-selling book, become a famous actor or start your own band, after your first guitar lesson. Maslow's hierarchy of needs states that you have to get your survival handled (your Physiological and Safety needs) before you can handle your higher needs.

If you're struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table, I would recommend meeting your immediate needs first. Focus your energies on endeavours that are guaranteed to give you an immediate income and pursue your dreams and ambitions in your spare time. If you've got 50,000 in the bank, then go for it, use your time however you want, however you need to feel safe first before you pursue your dreams full-time.
